Take Family Adventures to New Heights in Lake Chatuge

At Lake Chatuge, we think summertime is best spent stretching your legs and exploring the great outdoors. With so many wonderful, wandering trails that wind their way through the Blue Ridge Mountains that we call home, you’re sure to elevate your next family adventure by visiting Lake Chatuge. We’ve highlighted a few of our favorite trails to get you started on the perfect path.

Snake your way to the top of beautiful Bell Mountain for an artistic, scenic and less strenuous hike. The various rock formations that sit atop its peak are covered in vibrant paint, added by a variety of guests who have made the climb. This popular destination, perfect for snapping unique family photos, is easily accessible, with a steep paved road that winds all the way up. You can drive up to reach the top, or park at the mountain’s lower parking area and trek the final stretch on foot. You can also stretch those legs by climbing up the stairs to the mountain’s overlook pavilion. Head on up to get a closer view at the artistic creations and a full panoramic view of the entire town.

Another beautiful trail can be found right in Brasstown Valley Resort’s backyard. The Miller Trek loops through the beautiful forest that surrounds the resort. The full trail spans roughly six and a half miles, leading you back to Brasstown regardless of where you start. For those wanting a shorter trek, there is also a cut through path that reduces the journey to a two-and-a-half-mile loop. It’s a wonderful place to spot wildlife, like foxes, deer and possibly even a bear.

Another wonderful trail to explore is the Wagon Train Trail hike, which loops around part of Brasstown Bald and ends close to Young Harris College. Access the trail through the main parking area at Brasstown Bald and explore a piece of Georgia history on this seven-mile trek. The trail was originally carved out as a road for families traveling in covered wagons, hence its name. Pass by remarkable cliffsides and enjoy the shade of the beautiful forest that surrounds you. The trail is also not far from Jack’s Knob, one of the hiking trails connected to the Appalachian Trail, one of the country’s most notable and famous hiking paths. Lake Chatuge is home to several hikes connected to the Appalachian Trail, including Unicoi Gap, Dicks Creek Gap and Jack’s Knob Trail.

If you’re missing a few items, or wanting to restock before your hike through Georgia’s Enchanted Valley, Lake Chatuge proudly boasts several locally owned shops that are perfect for all hiking needs. Trailful Outdoor Co is located right on Main Street in Hiawassee. From boots and camp gear, to employees that are eager to share their knowledge of the area and love of the mountains, this hiking and backpacking outfitter has everything needed for a day spent exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lake Chatuge is also home to Hiawassee Hometown Pharmacy. This locally owned pharmacy is not only the perfect place to stock up on sunscreen and bug spray, but is also a great spot for hiking and outdoor supplies.
